It seems that loosing weight and getting fit are national obsessions. The USA pours more money into weight loss and fitness regimes than any other country in the world. However, with all of these efforts the USA still leads the world in obesity. Many want to loose weight but have no idea where to begin. Others start on a plan, loose some weight, only to gain it all back again. Ever wonder, why does this all happen? Can someone loose weight without having to resort to life altering surgeries and procedures? Why do so many fail? In this article we will look at these questions and attempt to give some simple and practical advice on weight loss.

America definitely has a problem with obesity. It is believed that by 2010, obesity will be the number one killer of adults in America. The good news is that there is something that can be done about this disease that cannot be done with other life threatening ailments. When setting out on a weight loss program, one must be realistic. Where many people fail is in the long term maintenance of their programs. Many, when they diet decide to cut out too many things and eventually lead themselves down the path of failure. When dieting, or making a change of eating habits, remember, this is designed to be for life. You need to have an eating plan that is realistic for you. To say that you’re never going to have a certain item again is completely unrealistic and next to impossible. Create an eating plan that you are comfortable with and you feel you can maintain for the long term. Allow yourself that indulgence every now and again. Don’t deprive yourself and you should never be hungry. If you can create an eating plan that you can maintain, your chances for long term weight loss greatly increase.

Ma ny fall into the trap of unrealistic weight goals. What usually happen is in the first week to 10 days of a new regime, the person sees quite a significant weight loss. This of course makes them happy but thinking you can maintain this is again, very unrealistic. Many times what happen is the following weeks you loose much less weight if any at all. People tend to become quite discouraged and even give up. To see large weight losses in the beginning is common. However, small weight losses to follow are usually what happens. One must keep this in mind when making the commitment to loose weight. Remember even a one pound loss is a loss in the right direction.

Finally, be realistic about exercise. Many see these tough workouts and think that this is the way to guaranteed weight loss. It is true that many of these do work but if you loose interest or can’t maintain it then there is no point. The best advice is to find an activity that you enjoy doing. Many are amazed that 30 minutes of walking can help speed weight loss. You do not have to live in the gym to get fit. There are many other ways to get healthy, the key is finding what works for you and sticking with it.

Loosing weight depends on the individual. Each person is different and must do what works for them. Make a meal plan that is realistic for you and engage in activities that you enjoy doing. Otherwise, your chances of success are going to be very limited.
